Cyber Security

SIEM

Stands for Security Information and Event Management or SIEM for short. To paraphrase what SIEM solutions offer, they help an organisation detect, analyse, and respond to security threats. This can either be for means of prevention from a cyber security threat or reflection of a breach. The latter being important too especially when in comes to strengthening an environment. Often without such platforms, post breach it’s difficult to identify likely points of entry where threat actors compromised a network. Consequentially, bolstering potential weaknesses can become more challenging without such insight.

SIEM solutions help organisations filter through the noise. With a vast array of security solutions within any network, there will be hundreds if not thousands of alerts daily from various solutions. For an IT teams, it’s hard to filter through this noise and interpret what’s important and what isn’t. The sheer quantity will often lead to important events being disregarded or not given the attention they warrant.

This is where SIEM solutions helps. They act as a filter and means of prioritisation. To take those thousands of event logs, filtering the masses to highlight those that really matter and need urgent attention.

For an IT team that has the resource capacity, they’re incredibly valuable tools. Though a word of caution, without the resources ie internal manpower, a SIEM solution in isolation won’t help.
